About

‘A little bit country and a whole lot of rock and roll’ describes the music of singer-songwriter Dahlia Wakefield. Dahlia has just released her brand new single, “All The Way to Heaven“, written by Dean McTaggart, Gerald O’Brien, and Catt Gravitt. Produced by Rob Hewes in Sherwood Park and Gerald O’Brien in Nashville, “All The Way To Heaven” is a beautiful song about eternal love which has the potential to be 2013’s wedding song of the year. “I fell in love with the song when I first heard the demo. I knew right away that I wanted to record it.” Dahlia looks forward to recording and releasing a brand new country album in early 2014, and this is the lead single.

On May 4th, 2013, Dahlia won the “Global Country Star Search” competition in her category with Carrie Underwood’s song “Blown Away”. She is excited to get the opportunity to perform on stage with a band at Festival Place during the 15th Annual Global Country Concert on June 23rd at Festival Place. She is also excited to participate in the North American Country Music Associations International (NACMAI) competition in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee and also will receive a tour of Nashville in March 2014!

Dahlia (PRON: DALE-yuh) officially independently released her third full-length album, “Full Circle” at Overtime Taphouse and Grill to a full house on March 11, 2012. The songs on that recording were mostly written in the wee hours of the night while her children were asleep. Three producers – two from Edmonton – Gerry Dere and Tommy Schaaf as well as Winnipeg producer Jim Stoeber have lent their amazing talents to “Full Circle”, which represented her return to music.

Dahlia recently had the opportunity of a lifetime where she sang the national anthems for the 2012 Edmonton Indy, the bilingual Canadian National Anthem for the Tim Horton’s Brier, opened for famous Filipina band “Aegis” at the River Cree Casino with Virginia Domingo, and also performed as part of a group from Cooper Studios for the Opening Ceremonies for the Women’s Baseball World Cup at Telus Field in August 2012. Dahlia had a great time opening for George Canyon at the 2012 River City Roundup alongside Shawna Lynne and Karen Claypool and also sang for Leduc’s Black Gold Rodeo. She was recently interviewed on OMNI TV’s “Alberta Culture Avenue” TV show, where she also sung her original song “Magic Wand”, which was a finalist in the Song of the Year international songwriting contest. Dahlia regularly performs solo, as a duo or trio act, and also with a full 4 or 5-piece band, depending on the venue.

Having released one self-titled demo in 2000, full length albums “Close To Home” (2003), “Down This Road” (2006), and more recently “Full Circle” (2012) on her independent label Squirrelly Girl Music, Dahlia knows music will always be her passion in life, especially when it comes to co-producing her music. Dahlia has received full rotation commercial airplay with her single “Let’s Talk About Love” on local & online stations, in Europe and Australia. Many of her songs have been played on CBC Radio. She has appeared on telethons, TV shows, performed at festivals and casinos in Edmonton with trio The X-Factor and Apex Casino with country artist Shawna Lynne. Dahlia has been a finalist in 6 international songwriting competitions, has songs on 5 compilation CDs, and has recorded backup vocals for many artists and lead vocals for several bands. She has just released a video on YouTube for her single “Simple Things”.

Dahlia was born in the Philippines but was raised in Canada – specifically, the small rural town of Maidstone, Saskatchewan. Dahlia fronted a few bands in Lloydminster, Alberta, but left when rock ’n’ roll and the bright lights of the big city of Edmonton, Alberta beckoned. Armed with fierce determination, a love of music, a whole lot of talent and a look as exotic as the flower she was named after, Dahlia headed to Edmonton where the start of a great future lay in front of her. Formal training at Grant MacEwan University, where she graduated with Distinction, sharpened Dahlia’s songwriting skills, while belting it out in cover bands by night honed her live chops. Her past influences are Martina McBride, Faith Hill, Heart, Joni Mitchell, Fleetwood Mac, Pat Benatar, Bonnie Raitt, Amanda Marshall, Jann Arden, Alannah Myles, Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morrisette, Shania Twain, and many others.

In 2007 and 2009, Dahlia gave birth to two beautiful girls. Balancing motherhood with music has been a welcome challenge. “Though my family will always come first, I’m like a fish out of water without music in my life … I’m really glad to be back on the scene”, she confesses. Her husband, Shawn, is very supportive of Dahlia’s career. Becoming a vocal coach in March 2011 at Cooper Studios has reawakened Dahlia’s passion for music, and she wholeheartedly enjoys teaching emerging artists realize their full potential. In fact, she’s been co-writing with some of her students who already have songs on the radio – including emerging singer-songwriter Jasmine Singh.

With her love of music, powerhouse vocal presence, and her brand new single “All The Way To Heaven” released Dec. 26th, 2012 to country radio across Canada, Dahlia Wakefield is already proving she is in it for the long haul.
